Phoenix Rising: Phil of MULE's CJ6 Project

Phoenix Rising: Phil of MULE's CJ6 Project

The guys here at MULE are enthusiasts. They are passionate about vehicles, geek out over cool projects, and do the same activities both at work and at home because they love it. We build lots of dream vehicles here at the shop for customers, and when the guys are at home they are often found bringing to life their own dream projects.

Here is a little background on inside sales and all around master of the MULE universe Phil's CJ6 build.

Phil acquired this rolling project about a year ago. A buddy of his purchased the whole Jeep for his own CJ project but really only wanted the soft top off it. Phil happily took the rest of it for about $1000.

So what is it? Currently, it's a 1959 Willys Overland CJ6. It sits on a stretched 1993 YJ frame which means it has superior suspension to the original CJ6 along with a fuel injected 4 liter engine.

Phil plans to do the build as a restomod -- keep the classic CJ6 look but with modern components and capabilities. The YJ dash will disappear and a MULE custom aluminum dash will take it's place with a look more in line with the CJ6 original. He'll keep the Dana 30 front end and already has a Dana 44 rear with an ARB Air Locker in it.

The tub will need a little buffing, but nothing a solid few days of restoration won't take care of.

Additionally, the build will feature a 1997 Jeep TJ 4.0L (with about 50k original miles), Aisin-Warner AW4 automatic transmission, NP242 transfer case with a TeraLow 4:1, a 3.5" suspension lift (brand to be determined) and a custom designed and fabricated hard top. And, of course, the CJ front clip will go back on because, well, it's cooler looking (grill is a unique one from a DJ5A postal Jeep, made from '68-'70).

We're looking forward to seeing this build come to fruition and get back on the trails where it should be. We'll keep you posted on the progress as Phil gets going on it again in earnest this summer. We can't wait to see it start coming back to life!
